Know your dog.

Breed groups classify breeds and traits. It is important to note that if the dog is a mixed breed with a dog from a different group it may show characteristics from each breed such as a Cockerpoo, in which a Cocker Spaniel is from the sporting group and a Poodle is from the non-sporting group.

It is important to research your dog’s breed, so you know what traits they have and what they were bred for, some dogs aren’t bred for their original job anymore so may not have such enhanced traits. Some dogs fall into two breed groups.

Herding breeds were bred to herd cattle and sheep. Today many are kept as pets or are used within the police force and private security such as Belgian Shepherds and German Shepherds, but they still retain the instinct to herd other animals, including people, into groups. They are extremely intelligent, sociable, energetic and require lots of mental and physical stimulation. Breeds in this group include Collies, German Shepherds, Belgian Shepherds, Corgis and Canaan dogs.

Sporting breeds were bred for hunting and field pursuits where they would locate and retrieve game. They have high energy levels and need a lot of exercise. These are also kept as pets today and are also used as sniffer dogs for the fire service, police and army, usually they are spaniels. Breeds in this group consist of: Springer Spaniels, Cocker Spaniels, Labradors, Setters, Pointers, Hungarian Vizsla, Golden Retriever, Britany, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever and the Irish Water Spaniel.

Hound breeds have strong hunting instincts, they will need careful introductions to smaller breeds as they may get mistaken for prey. Hounds strongest attributes are either sight or scent.

Sight hounds are Greyhounds, Afghan Hounds, Deer hounds, Salukis, Borzois, Italian Greyhounds, Whippets and the Sloughi.

Scent hounds are the Beagle, Basset Hound, Foxhound, Bloodhound, Dachshund, Basset Griffons and the Coonhound.

Both sight and scent hounds were bred for hunting large and small game. Greyhounds were bred for extreme speed over a short distance, so they enjoy a short sprint and then are content with being relaxed for the rest of the day, whereas Deerhounds, Salukis and Wolfhounds were bred for speed and stamina so need more exercise.

Foxhounds, Beagles and Bloodhounds were bred for stamina and have an acute sense of smell. They will need plenty of exercise and sniffing opportunities. When considering these dogs, it important to know training a recall off lead may be harder than other breed groups.

Toy dogs were bred for a variety of purposes and this group includes dog breeds such as the Italian Greyhound, Yorkshire Terrier and Manchester Terrier. This means that dogs in this group will need to be researched as some were bred for hunting and others were bred for companionship. Dog breeds in this group include: Affenpinscher, Brussels Griffon, Maltese, Chihuahuas, Papillon, Pekinese, Pug, Fox Terrier and Havanese.

Terrier group breeds vary a lot in size, they were bred to kill vermin or to fight, they are lively and enthusiastic, retain enormous courage and are intelligent dogs. Breeds in this group are West Highland White Terriers, Black Russian Terriers, Parsons Jack Russell, Airedale Terriers, Patterdale Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers and Cairn Terriers.

Working Breed group were bred for a variety of roles helping humans with tasks, from mountain rescues to rescuing people in water and from guarding property to pulling sledges. This means a lot of individual breed research will need to be conducted. They are large breeds that have a lot of stamina, great strength and are intelligent so they need to be well trained, especially on the lead. They will need to have a job for their lives to feel fulfilled and content. Breeds in this group consist of Akitas, Boxers, Newfoundland, Mastiffs, Bernese Mountain Dog, Samoyed, Komondor, Alaskan Malamute, Rottweiler, Boerboel and Tibetan Mastiff.

In the Non-Sporting dog group category they have a variety of different personalities and have different needs to others in this group, dogs in this group may also cross over into other groups. Breeds in this group are Dalmatians, Boston Terriers, Bulldogs, Keeshond, Poodles, Chow Chows, Shar-Peis, Schipperkes and Tibetan Spaniels.
